Major General (BGR A) Dimitar Krumov ILIEV

Born on December 10, 1963
Major General Dimitar Iliev is a native of Assenovgrad, Plovdiv district. He was commissioned a field artillery second lieutenant in 1985 upon graduation from Georgi Dimitrov High Artillery School, Shumen.
Major General Dimitar Iliev assumed responsibility as the Deputy Commander of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Thessaloniki, Greece on April 11, 2016 after serving as a Commander, 2-nd Mechanized brigade from June 30, 2014 to March, 2016.
He has served in a wide variety of command and staff positions throughout his military career, starting as an artillery platoon leader in 1985. He continued his military service as an artillery battery commander and then served as a platoon leader in the High Artillery School until 1992. General Iliev departed the latter position to pursue his military education at the G. S. Rakovski National Defense Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria and upon graduation in 1994, was assigned as the Chief of staff of artillery battalion, and later as the Deputy Chief of staff for reconnaissance. He served at that position for almost three years and then was assigned as an artillery battalion commander where he served until 2007. General Iliev continued his military education in US Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. Upon completion of the US Army War College International Fellows Program in 2008, General Iliev was appointed Deputy Chief of department in Land Forces Headquarters and later Chief of department in Joint Operations Command. After serving for a year at that position, he assumed the duties of deputy chief of Operations department, in Joint Forces Command and remained at that position until 2011. Following another significant duty in Joint Forces Command, General Iliev was appointed to the position of Commander, 4-th artillery regiment in Assenovgrad in December 2011.
On June 30, 2014, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and appointed to the position of Commander, 2-nd mechanized brigade, Stara Zagora.
On April 01, 2016 he was promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed to Deputy Commander, NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Thessaloniki, Greece.
His military education includes Georgi Dimitrov High Artillery School, Shumen, Bulgaria; G. S. Rakovski National Defense Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria; United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, USA.
General Iliev’s awards and decorations include “Loyal Service with the colors” III class, presented by the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Bulgaria in 2004, Army Commendation, presented by the Land Forces Commander in 2012, Decoration of merit “Loyal Service with the colors” I class, presented by the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Bulgaria in 2012; Army Officer’s daggers presented by the Chief of Defense in 2013 and 2014 and many others.
Major General Iliev was deployed operationally in Iraq in 2004 where he was awarded with an US military commendation medal. He also made a short tour to Afghanistan in 2011.
He has a good command of English.
Major General Dimitar Iliev is married and has two sons and a daughter.
