DEPUTY COMMANDER NRDC-GR

Major General Ivan ORTOMAROV was born in Bourgas, Republic of Bulgaria in 1964. In 1987 he graduated from Vassil Levski Land Forces Academy (currently National Military University), majoring in Engineer Troops’ Command and Control. Upon graduation, he was commissioned into a second lieutenant and he took up the position of platoon leader.  Few months later he was appointed as engineer floating bridge company commander. In 1993 he was promoted to engineer battalion commander. In 1997, following military career path, he graduated from Rakovski Defense and Staff College majoring in Operational and Tactical Command and Control of Land Forces’ Units.

 

He has held a variety of staff positions within the Bulgarian Armed Forces (BGR AF), namely Head of Engineer Troops Section of 1st Mechanized Brigade HQ, Senior Officer at Engineer Troops Branch with 1st Army Corps, Senior Officer at NATO Integration and Interoperability Branch at J5 with BGRAF General Staff, Head of Allied and Coalition Operations Section at J5 with BGR AF General Staff, Head of Advance Planning Department at J5 with BGR AF General Staff, Director for Operations and Training, BGR Defense Staff, Ministry of Defense.

 

MG Ortomarov is a graduate of the Bulgarian General Staff College (2011) and upon his return to the Ministry of Defense, he occupied the position of State Expert at Operations & Training Directorate with the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense.

 

Operational service includes two overseas deployments. From November 2013 to November 2014, he held the position of DCOS Support EUFOR HQ Sarajevo, EU-Led operation “ALTHEA” in Bosnia and Herzegovina where he was responsible for EUFOR’s combat service support and in the real life support of Camp Butmir. Apart from his daily routine, he was actively involved in EUFOR efforts to support local authorities in managing the consequences of devastating floods in May 2014. In his capacity as EUFOR Chief of Combined Joint Operation Center in Tuzla, he played a leading role in planning, monitoring, and guiding the execution of all military operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina at that time.

 

On completion of the mission in the end of 2014, he was appointed as 29-th BULCON Commander within NATO-led RS Mission in Afghanistan for a 7-month tour of duty. He was deployed in Kandahar Airfield (KAF), Train Advise Assist Command - South and subsequently served with the US Army combat teams from 1st Cavalry Division and 7th Infantry Division.

 

He has attended various training courses, namely NATO JFC Brunssum-led Combined Joint Task Force Headquarters Course, Key Leaders Training, BiH, Pre-deployment Operational Awareness Course, English language course for military staff officers in PSO, Croatia, Crises Management Exercise Planners Training Course led by COE Crises Management for Disaster Response, Sofia, Bulgaria, etc.

 

MG Ortomarov has been awarded an Order Third Class of Loyal Service under the colours, Service medal for successful mission accomplishment and other awards corresponding to his military rank.

 

Overseas awards include EU Common Security and Defense Policy service medal, NATO service medal “Afghanistan” and EUFOR Commander Commendation for outstanding leadership and comprehensive support as a Deputy Chief of Staff Support EUFOR HQ, Sarajevo.

 

MG Ortomarov took up post as Deputy Commander of NRDC-GR in August 2018.

 

MG Ortomarov and his wife Maya have two adult children.
